When your team misses a deadline, what’s your first instinct?
A) Add pressure: “We need this done by end of day” B) Find the barrier: “What’s preventing this from moving forward?”
Most leaders choose A.
Here’s what actually happens:
Your team was already working as hard as they could. The problem wasn’t effort—it was the approval chain that takes 3 days, the CRM fields that don’t make sense, the outdated system that crashes twice a day, the meeting that could have been an email.
So you add pressure. They work harder. The barriers remain. Nothing fundamentally changes.
Then next month, you add more pressure.
The pattern:
Barrier exists → Team struggles → Leader adds pressure → Team burns out → Barrier still exists → Repeat
Result: You’re managing symptoms while the disease spreads.
